Secretary’s Report

Visits during September: Warrington Circle – John Sutton

  • The results of the vote on the GBNC Capitation fee (an increase of £12.50 for 24/25) have been announced.  The vote was 70.4% in favour of increasing the capitation fee with 3,300 brothers voting.
  • An obituary for Tony Wier has been written and is with Margaret and family for approval. Once approved it will be submitted to Catena for publication as well as a copy being kept for Circle records.
  • Central office has updated Catenian branding – you will start to see this in regular communications.  The Circle website has already been updated.

Provincial Report

  • Stuart McNeill of Brooklands will take over from Mike Guerin as Provincial Director from May.
  • Talks on a possible merger with Province 1 have taken place. Wilmslow Circle and North Cheshire Circle are in advanced discussions to merge from April in order to create a stronger unit to build on for the future. Circle meetings would be at Ringway GC. The move needs the approval of National Council.
  • The old Provincial trophies have been collected in and replaced with new ones for this year.
  • Membership – Crewe Circle have added 2 new members.
  • National – Brother Director reported that the development of the “Digital Highway” project was still running slightly late.

  • £250 has been donated to the Alzheimer Society in memory of Tony Weir.

Social Events

The children’s party went very well with 50 children (maximum capacity) enjoying party games and a disco.  Feedback was very positive, and it was clear to all that it was the Catenians doing all the organising.  We may need to make the event even bigger next year.

The date of the Charter and Clergy Dinner has been changed to the 22nd of February due to low numbers booking for the original date.  Ladies will now be invited, and the revised invitation will go out on the 6th Feb.  A booking form was also available at the meeting.

Upcoming events

  • Beartown Brewery visit – Wednesday 6th March (Steve Graham) an invitation has been sent out.
  • End of month Thursday drink at the Sessions House on the 29th of February.

Felix gave a short presentation on his proposals for entertainment in 2024/25.  A key theme was greater involvement of the parish and school community building on the good work done by John over the last two years.  He also wanted more events to involved charitable giving to the SVP. A copy of his proposal is attached to these minutes and Felix will welcome any feedback.

Membership

  1. The president welcome Gideon Hayford back to his second meeting as a visiting gentleman.  We expect Gideon to be enrolled at either the March or April meeting.

President’s Report

John participated in a presentation to Knutsford Rotary Club about Just Drop In.  The presentation went well, and Rotary gave a donation. John also noted that the Rotary Club seemed to have similar issues to us regarding membership.  There may be some opportunities for joint events.

Other meeting notes

Jim Flood reminded brothers that, if they choose to book a holiday/cruise with Riviera Holidays they will donate 10% of the cost of the holiday to our circle.  You do need to emntion the Catenians at the time of booking.  Our circle received funds this year following a holiday John Sutton booked and Warrington Circle expects to receive over £2,000 in the coming year.  You can see details on the back page of Catena.

John Sutton mentioned that he and Jean had attended the regional public peaking event in Manchester on the 4th February.  It was an excellent event and he also noted that James Power is chair of the judges.  John encouraged brothers to attend the final on September 11th – both for a good afternoon out and to support James.

Steve Tiernan reminded brothers about the upcoming Sam’s luncheon – details had already been circulated and are also on the Provincial website.

Steve also gave a useful briefing about the status of the merger between North Cheshire and Wilmslow Circles.  He encouraged brothers to attend the first meeting of the merged circle in April. A buffet will be provided.

New Hearing loop System

Stuart informed the Circle that we had recently purchased a hearing loop system to make meeting easier to understand for those brothers who use a hearing loop.  The loop will only work for those sitting in the front half of the meeting room.  Brothers were reminded that they need to use the microphones for the loop system to work.

Note:  Feedback after the meeting was generally positive.  It was noted that the microphones need to be held next to the speakers mouth for them to be effective.

Provincial Report

  • Website – Development of Provincial website is continuing and all 10 Circles in Province now have a working website.
  • Province – The Provincial mass took place at Holy Angels on November 18th and although not overall well attended there was good representation from Knutsford Circle. The Provincial carol service was held at St Pius Alderley Edge on December 10th attended by approximately 45 brothers and guests.
Membership – Brother Harish reported that he was encouraged by the number of new Brothers who had joined, or would be joining, the Province, particularly via Knutsford and North Cheshire Circles. There was a debate on the part played by the Parish Priest in aiding recruitment, particularly given the role played by Catenians in many parishes. It was felt that there should be an overall view taken by Bishops to encourage local Priests to support Circles. This was a view put forward by North Cheshire.
  • National – Brother Director reported on the development of the “Digital Highway” project. The developers are committed to finding leads for 300 potential recruits for Circles per annum.
  • There is an emphasis on reducing Central costs e.g. Warwick will be the last “live” National Conference after which the national AGM will all be online supported by a National Social Event.

  • Just Drop In will be the charity at Hey Rose golf club during Tom’s year as captain, it will also be the chosen charity for the incoming Mayor of Knutsford
