Secretary’s Report

  • The secretary noted that an interim report from the Restructuring committee had been circulated

Provincial Report

  • National President Roger Lillee was in attendance.
  • Provincial President Brother Harish outlined his objectives for the year which included:
    • continuing development of provincial website and diary (with a little assistance from Knutsford Circle)
    • to undertake a particular review of the South Manchester area to assess its potential for recruitment.
    • to hold a Provincial Membership Workgroup Meeting to continue work on key Membership objectives. Now arranged for Sept 12th Ringway GC.
  • Details of the Provincial Weekend in Malta in November were being finalised and would be announced shortly.
  • Membership
    • Particular concern about the falling membership at Ashton Circle. Brother Chris Wright reported that the Circle was undertaking a number of initiatives to rectify this situation, including a visit from Ukranian and Polish groups. This took place in July.
  • Charity
    • Reported that applications for funding for Lourdes trips were rising. We are short of project applications from sixteen to twenty-four year olds.
  • Around the Circles
    • There was a common theme across a number of Circles of falling numbers and attendance at meetings. A few Circles however were able to report the recruitment of new Brothers.
    • There was a common issue of recruitment of Circle Officers, particularly VPs for this year.
    • Conversely, a number of Circles reported that social events were being well supported.
  • National President Roger Lillee comments:
    • He said that good communications and publicity would be essential in achieving his three goals in his Presidential year:
      • to raise the profile of the Association,
      • to ensure mutual support through team working
      • to implement the restructuring of the organisation.
    • An interim report on the restructuring has been circulated to Circle. Brother Roger reported that a new highly professional Communications and Publicity Officer had been appointed who was already achieving good results e.g. articles in the Universe, together with updating our approach to the use of Social Media.
    • He noted that a number of the problems raised at the meeting such as the appointment of VPs were common throughout the Association, but encouraged Circles to act autonomously (come to their own decisions) within the overall “Aims & Values” of the Association, including using the support of ladies.
    • He said that the Association was “cash rich”, therefore able to help fund initiatives on recruitment and retention.
  • Date for Provincial Carol Service, St Mary’s Crewe Dec 11th

  • The circle meeting agreed to hold the Christmas Dinner immediately after the December Circle meeting on the 5th December
  • Felix Martin has noted the request from Bill Gore for a recollection that includes wives (as well as one just for men) and will discuss this with Father Michael.  It is unlikely that a recollection will take place before October as the Hall is in constant use over the next few months.
  • John Sutton described the meeting he went to at Ashton Circle which included some representatives from the Ukrainian community (there are now ~100,000 refugees in the UK).  There was good engagement and discussions on how Catenians could help.  There were tentative proposals for a Mass.
  • Wilmslow circle is keen to have a joint event with us and we are likely to have a joint meeting (in Cottons) in October.

President’s Report

Focus of my year as president is to grow the circle and make it a stronger force in our local catholic community (in province, in school and in church). I want to build greater awareness of us, build great relationships and hold many inclusive events.

Province

  • Several of us (Martin Relton, John Sutton, Sean McGhee, John Ross, David Perls and myself) attended the Provincial Convention held at Ringway Golf Club on 6th July.
  • Attended Provincial meeting will be held at Pinewood Hotel on 12th July. The National President Roger Lillee attended. Myself, John and Martin attended. Roger gave an interesting talk (he is Southampton circle and is national president despite neve holding provincial office and just one year as circle president – so I need to watch out!
  • He wants a focus on sharing best practice which is a good idea. One example was having woman holding offices (e.g. communication, social events etc.). Southampton have a reach out group with the university of Southampton catholic society. That incudes female students – we live in interesting times!
  • Another is a circle (in Catena this month) in Perth, Australia who host an annual sons and daughters’ dinner!
  • Provincial Membership Work Group, to be held on Monday,12th September, at 6.30pm. This will become a quarterly event.
  • Pleased to hear Stuart and Martin being called out by Provincial President for helping province with Web site and new Provincial membership working group
  • Joint meeting with Wilmslow on 3rd October (at the Cottons)

School

  • School summer fete Sunday 9th July. Very successful and I got very good feedback from the PTA. I have asked how much was raised. Waiting to hear. Thank you to John and Jean, Richard and Peter Lowe
  • Inviting the school to President Saturday

Parish

  • Parish Social calendar (Stuart)
  • Helping Father David arrange a parish meal at Knutsford Golf Club one Friday in November (TBC)
  • Father has asked us to provide mulled wine and mince pies at the Parish Carol Concert (Date TBC). Also same for Dec 3rd for the Crib ceremony

President’s charity.

  • JustDropIn have been given a GREEN light from their trustees to progress with the Knutsford drop-in centre. The need for this is growing in Knutsford. We will launch at Presidents Saturday and will go live in October. New Mayor of Knutsford Mike Houghton and his wife will attend. I will invite Knutsford Guardian.

Social Events

The St George’s night dinner went very well with good attendance, and it made a small profit. Brother President has received several thank-you notes and he expressed his thanks to everyone who helped make the event such a success. The event raised £450 for the President’s Charity and £450 for support to Ukraine – this included a significant contribution from the auction of a bottle of wine provided by Bill Gore. The Knutsford Beer Festival event also went well with 12 people attending.

The Knutsford Beer Festival event also went well with 12 people attending.

The recollection at Thornycroft Hall also went very well and John thanked Felix for his work in arranging it.  Jim Flood also thanked Felix and Father Michael for an event he found spiritually uplifting, held in beautiful surroundings with great food and company.  He recommends attendance to anyone who has not been before.

  • Tatton Walk 21/22nd May – to be confirmed in an email
  • Parish Meeting 25th May – we will offer drinks after the meeting (once agreed with Father David)
  • Rugby – Sales Sharks vs Bristol Bears – June 4th.  John Piper is organising this – there has been no interest so far.  We will send out one more email and then decided whether to defer to the new season
  • A Sunday lunch will be arranged for mid-June
  • Arrangements are underway for President’s Sunday

Martin Relton briefed the circle about our input to the church Flower Festival on 25/26th June.  Martin is already helping out; Martin Roberts will act as treasurer and we need people to help with a rota to welcome people as they come to the festival.   Sean McGhee’s wife, Ma Angeles, is helping to do a Catenian floral display and would welcome any help.

Membership

John Long gave a brief update on membership with his focus being on parish and the school.  He has spoken with Chris Jones and asked him to liaise with Steve Graham (a governor at St. Vincent’s) to maximise opportunities for membership from the school.  John also noted that Mark Jones will become a country member as his work commitments prevent him from being fully engaged with Circle meetings and events.

Bill Gore raised his concerns about the declining membership of the Circle – down from 62 ten years ago to 42 now – with only one new member in the last three years.  He felt that the Circle and Membership Officer needed to be much more active in engaging with the parish and taking advantage of any increase in the catholic population arising from the new housing developments in Knutsford.

Martin Relton noted that whilst we had lost members that we were doing better in membership than most other circles in Province.

Felix Martin noted that that we need to do more activities that would attract younger members.

Peter Pozzoni noted that we also need to focus attention on keeping existing members.

Mike Chidgey reminded people that everyone in the Circle has the job of seeking out new members.  The Membership Officer role is principally that of managing the process once someone is interested.

John Long responded to Bill and indicated that he fully agreed with the issues raised by Bill and that he had already thought about them and – in particular – the social programme to be outlined later in the meeting should help.

Other meeting notes

  • Subscriptions are now due.
  • The Circle has £3,522 in the bank.
  • So far £97 has been raised for Just Drop in through sponsorship of Stuart Jones doing the Macclesfield Bikeathon

  • Brother Chris Loughran advised the Council that he would not be able to take up the role of Provincial President, due to health issues.
  • The Provincial membership system was working well and monthly reports and data had been received from all Circles, which would be reviewed with Circle Membership Officers shortly.
  • There were 307 Brothers in Province. There had been a 55% attendance record in December, and an improvement in the “no apologies” record.
  • Provincial Director Mike Guerin confirmed that he would be distributing recruitment material to Circles. Councillors commented on the success of previous marketing material, particularly the Rosary leaflets (which MR now has a stack of and will pass to Felix).
  • 2022 National Conference would be at Eastbourne, where Roger Lilley will be installed as National President.
  • Sam’s Luncheon Club would go ahead on February 8th, although there would be a different speaker (Bill Gore).

  • Prior to the vote on reduced subscription for new members there was a discussion with a number of people speaking (Bill Gore, Felix Martin, Tom Hughes, John Ross, Richard Brown, Martin Relton).  Views were expressed both in favour and against the proposal.  The formal proposal was proposed by Sean McGhee and seconded by Jim Flood.  The proposal was carried by a large majority.

President’s Report

  • The president expressed his thanks to Martin Relton and all involved in the Children’s Event at which 30 children attended from 18 families – some had to drop out due to Covid 19 isolation rules
  • The president expressed his thanks to John Shaw for co-ordinating bookings for Sam’s Luncheon Club for many years. John would like to step down and therefore, a volunteer is required to take over John’s role.
  • Proposal from Council that we introduce reduced membership fees for New Members. The proposal is to offer a 50% reduction for the first 12 months of membership.
  • Volunteers are needed to act as ‘link’ person for St. Vincents’s Parish and St. Nicholas High School
  • We need nominees for Council positions – especially Vice President
  • At the 2021 Australian National Conference, a motion was passed that approved the deletion of the word ‘practising’ for the purpose of assessing a potential member’s eligibility for membership of the Association. Subsequently the motion was confirmed by more than 200 members voting in favour.
  • The Extraordinary Procedure set out in Rule 26(b) now requires this motion to be referred to every circle in the Association for a vote of the members. A majority of two thirds is required under Rule 26 for the motion to be approved. Circles are entitled to three months in which to complete the vote.  There was a brief discussion with points raised by John Ross, Felix Martin, Tony Andrews and Peter Lowe. Brothers will be asked to vote by email/post.
  • At the moment only 12 brothers have signed up for the Charter and Clergy Dinner.

Provincial Report

  • The next council meeting is the 11th Jan.  There is nothing else to report

Social Events

  • Children’s Christmas party Sunday January 23rd – will be a circus skills event.  Everything is organised, information went out from the school this week. A flyer will be posted in the church porch.
  • Charter and Clergy Night – Friday 28th Jan.  The view from the circle was that we should postpone the event to later in Feb or March

  • John Long proposed Brunch at the Lambing Shed around 10:30 am, probably on a Wednesday, date to be confirmed.

Other meeting notes

  • There is an outstanding invoice for the Mass for deceased brothers to be received.

  • Mike Chidgey reviewed the latest position of Sam’s Luncheon Club and asked for information on how many brothers would be likely to attend, by the end of the month.

President’s Report

  • First of all, may I wish everyone a very Happy New Year. I, like everyone else, am hoping for a return to some sort of normality this year after the last two years of worry and uncertainty. Unfortunately, having to hold a virtual meeting in place of a face-to-face meeting is not the start that I would have wished for. But, given the current wave of infections, Council decided to err on the side of caution and make this meeting a virtual one.
  • Nevertheless, despite Covid, we did still manage to hold our planned Christmas events, our Christmas Dinner, the Evening of Recollection, the Catenian presence at the Blessing of the Crib and the Beer and Nibbles event. I would like to thank all those involved in the planning and execution of these, in particular, John Long, Nick Johnson and Felix Martin.
  • As a special thanks to Nick who played a major role in organising the very successful Christmas Dinner, I would like to present a small gift, from the Circle for all his efforts. Thank You Nick.
  • Again, due to concerns over Covid, the proposed Valentines Ball on Feb 14th which was to be a shared event with Wilmslow Circle has been postponed until next year. I believe we are still planning to make our St George’s Night in May a joint event with Wilmslow.
  • Tonight, we should have been awarding the Martin Trophy to one of our visitors, but as this is a virtual meeting, I think it best to postpone this until our next face-to-face meeting.
  • As far as I know we have not received nominees for any Council positions. Therefore, elections will not take place tonight. If you would like to stand for one of the open positions, please send your nomination to our Secretary, Stuart Jones, preferably before the start of the new Catenian Year in April.

Warm Welcome Trophy

The virtual warm welcome trophy went to Mike Chidgey
