Secretary’s Report

  • No report this month

Provincial Report

  • There will not be a Provincial Carol Concert this year due to Covid 19 restrictions.
  • A joint Public Speaking initiative with Province 1 is being arranged.
  • Roger Lilley will become National President for 2021/22, and Mark Conroy will be National VP for the period.
  • There will be a number of pilot studies on membership conducted in 2022 e.g., Women, Non-Catholic Husbands of Catholic Ladies.
  • Sam’s Luncheon Club held its first meeting since Lockdown with 30 diners. The next meeting will be held on 14th December 2021 with Stuart McNeil as guest speaker.
  • Karol Konotsky has been appointed National Charities officer. Province will provide Circle charity officers with his communication details. Around £300,000 had been donated to non-Catenian Charities and there was a need to place a greater emphasis on Charitable works across the Association and to the public.

Social Events

  • Recollection at Thorneycroft – Thursday 16th December.  It will be preceded by a light buffet for which a donation is requested.
  • Beer & Nibbles night – Wednesday 22nd December at the Legh Arms after the church carol service.  Open to Catenians, wives and friends
  • Children’s Christmas party Sunday January 23rd – will be a circus skills event.  Being planned by Martin Relton

Membership

  • No report

Other meeting notes

  • The current cleared bank balance (excluding receipts for Christmas Dinner) is £6,151
  • The treasurer is forecasting a year-end balance of approx. £4,200

President’s Report

  • Last month we received a donation of £300 to our President’s Charity (Cheshire Young Carers) from Knutsford Rotary Club. This was part of an award of £2,000 that they received from Knutsford Medial Partnership as a “Thank You” for organising marshalling for the Covid vaccination programme and to help them to continue doing “good works around the town”. The donation from the Rotary Club was a recognition of the significant part that the Knutsford Catenians played in the programme.
  • Also a letter from Sarah Flannery of “Knutsford Hosts” was published in the Knutsford Guardian last week thanking the Rotary, Catenians and others for all their efforts managing the Covid Vaccination programme. I would like to add my thanks, to the Knutsford Brothers who represented our Circle in this community effort. I think we can be proud that in a time of great need, when asked, we responded. Thank you.
  • Wilmslow Circle have proposed that we make their Valentines Ball on Feb 14th a joint event. Council thinks this is a good idea as it shares the risk and the work in organising such an event. As yet we have no further details but if nobody objects, I propose that we pursue this idea.
  • Sean has the Martin Trophy, which was awarded to our Circle when Sean and Bro. Provincial President John visited Macclesfield Circle on Nov 25th. The trophy was given to our Province, Province 17 on October 1st, 1954 by A.J. Martin of Province 1 to mark the creation of Province 17.  The aim of the trophy is to encourage visiting amongst circles and is awarded to the circle that has the highest percentage of members visiting the current holders.  I believe the practice is that we retain the trophy for one month then it is up for grabs by other circles i.e. at our January meeting.
  • Nominees for Council position are now open. Please send any nominations to our Secretary, Stuart Jones by January 7th. Elections, if required, will take place at the January meeting (according to the rule book).
  • The president also thanked John and Ann Long for organising the Christmas Crib Refreshments and for getting the Catenian “Thank You  message” to the Volunteers and NHS staff who supported  the Knutsford Community into the programme for the event

  • Provincial Councillor – nothing to report.  Martin Relton is our new Provincial Councillor
  • Treasurer – the finance report had been distributed prior to the meeting.  There were no questions.
  • Welfare – nothing to report.
  • Social events – Brother President thanked Bill Gore and Felix Martin for the third edition of Desert Island Disks which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
  • President’s report – brothers were reminded that the funeral of Marie Hampson (partner of the late Bernard Fitzgibbon) was taking place on the 5th March and asked any Brothers wishing to attend to let him know.
  • Charity Survey – 23 responses had been received and Brothers were reminded that the closing date for responses was the 8th March.  Bill Gore noted that the question of a loan to the SVP had not yet been answered.  John Ross welcomed the approach and Richard Paley asked for confirmation that any donations would not compromise the financial stability of the circle, Martin Roberts gave the assurance that the finances would be OK.
  • DocMail – Stuart Jones explained how the circle was not using DocMail to send physical post with greater ease and at lower cost than going to the Post Office

After Circle – Our Charter and Clergy event

Following the Circle Meeting we were joined by wives and Father David Long gave a very interesting talk about his role as Diocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage Director

747th Circle Meeting – 4th Jan 2021

Attendance and Apologies.

This was our 10th meeting held via Zoom.

13 members (25 last month), including 1 visitor (9 last month) logged in to the meeting.

Apologies received from Nick Johnson, Tom Hughes, David Perls (in hospital), Peter Doran (recuperating after heart surgery), Jim Meagher and James Power.

Matters Arising.

Bill Gore suggested that the proposal to re-schedule the 750th meeting too far ahead would be unsuitable for some of the longest serving brothers. John Ross agreed. After discussion it was decided that we should have a 750th event online (using break-out rooms) together with a celebratory dinner as soon as lockdown rules and vaccinations permitted.

Action on council to review details.

Officers’ Reports

Finance – circulated by Martin Roberts on 3rd December 2020. Final balance on 02/12/2020 was £6,253.93.

Membership – Bill Gore observed the steady reduction in the numbers of brothers even though the parish has welcomed 30 new families.

Action on council to review recruitment mechanism.

Other Business

  • Help with Maintenance of St Vincents. Covid 19 cleaning has identified that some of the pews need re-varnishing. Peter Pozzoni recommended that such maintenance should be done by qualified professionals (i.e. pews would be taken off-site for treatment). He stated categorically that this was not a suitable D.I.Y. project.
  • SVP – It wsa stated that funds are at a low level because collections are from a depleted congregation. Tentative suggestion that the catenians could make a loan or grant. Jean Sutton to be asked to supply Martin Roberts with more financial information as the current status is unclear.
  • Stuart J. suggested that we should use the website more for communicating information around the Circle. He agreed to draft a note on this topic. Action Stuart J.
  • John Long suggested that the Catenians should express their appreciation to Fr. David for his Christmas services. Action Sean M.
  • Visitor Roger Da Forno was asked if he would like to contribute. He reported that Holy Angels, Hale Barnes has exactly the same problems with their SVP.
